I've heard from several users recently of Print Window <http:// www.searchwaresolutions.com/products/printwindow/> who are trying to print to Fiery RIPs. All of them are getting the same message from the RIP when printing: "The process 'fierycupsfilter' terminated unexpectedly on signal 10".

I have access to a Fiery RIP and can reproduce the problem, but the issue is that I have absolutely no idea what is causing this. The RIP successfully processes all other print jobs from any other application I've tried.

When I trace through my print routine in the REALbasic debugger, it appears to successfully complete. The job spools. It's only after it's spooled to the RIP that the problem occurs.

Has anyone else had any experience printing to a Fiery RIP from a RB-made app, and if so, have you seen this problem? Any advice or suggestions as to where to look would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't tried to print to a Fiery RIP from REALbasic, but in my experience as a Prepress Operator, I have had the "opportunity" to deal with a lot of similar issues.

My recommendation for you is to capture the print spool file and try to process it with another RIP... I have found that the best tool to use is Adobe Acrobat Distiller using all of the same settings as if you were sending it to the Fiery RIP. Basically, if you can reproduce the error (or something similar) in Acrobat, then it is a problem with the file/REALbasic. Since Distiller is a end-user application, it provides far better error reporting than a hardware RIP, and there is a good chance that you could isolate the error. If you cannot reproduce the error, then it is an issue with the Fiery RIP and should be reported to Fiery, including the print-spool file in the bug report, and state which version of Adobe Acrobat the file correctly distills with.

It might turn out that this is a REALbasic-specific issue, but my guess is that this might an OS specific issue. In fact, it might be reproducible with a limited range of operating system versions (such as OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.7, but not lower than 10.3.8). So make sure you report the OS version the spool-file was printed from.
