What platform ?

Macs use 72 dpi on screen
Windows is usually 96

One inch is 72 points. On old Macs, screen resolution was 72 dpi, it
means 1 pixel = 1 point. Windows originaly used 96 points per inch,
but if you recalculate resolutions of current displays, you would get
resolutions well above 100dpi. Obviously, 17' Macbook with resolution
1680x1050 has significantly higher dpi then 19' monitor with 1280x1024
resolution, so there is just no standard dpi resolution any more
(though many applications still use 96 as a rule of thumb.)
