This is an interesting question: "For routine use, the EditField as it is works fine, doesn't it?"

Yes and no. It does work, but on Mac OS X it sure does lack some of the available options that other Carbon apps have. The EditField is primitive and doesn't support some of the niceties that other apps offer such as inline spellchecking (which is huge).

I'd agree.
Not sure what RB's underlying OS control is but it almost seems like it's the ancient text edit tuff and not the mlte stuff

I am not of the attitude that cross-platform is synonymous with "behaves identically".

I think you've misunderstood or misread my posts. I never said it had to be identical.

Word on Windows is not Word on OSX.
But as editing tools they function mostly similarly despite the underlying platform differences.

The editfield is not this way despite people's attempts to use it in this fashion.

I'd like something that behaved mostly similarly and was more capable than an editfield as a word processor ... like the FTC project.

And it would be nice if REAL provided that additional capability as part of the Pro package.
