So far communication has been only one way. I asked for an open 3rd party support program much like one Ive developed for another company - this brought about an accusation that I was promoting a competitor at REAL's expense. I would be happy if REAL out-and-out copied that same program. As co-owner of Paradigma Software, I know what third parties need from the host vendor. As a result of that program (and as one example), I was able to get Valentina and a third party Script Editor (a member of that third party program) and that competitor's program back cover coverage on the newest edition of Beginning Programming for Dummies 4th Edition. REALbasic is there and its also gotten coverage - unless I missed it, I don't think any other REALbasic component developer made it onto the CD (certainly not back cover!). After posting that message above, I have received emails from other 3rd party component developers for REALbasic that their press releases have also been ignored. Third party programs work for everyone when its an open process. If you only negotiate directly with the first party vendor, you are only getting a small portion of the value of the third party program, because: 1. You are in a weaker position. Dialog is only between you and the vendor, therefore when the vendor says jump, you jump or get ignored. That's okay if you are an Apple or even a Filemaker and you don't NEED your third party vendors. 2. You do not get all cross-marketing value. Open communication between third party vendors means cross-selling/cross-marketing opportunities. 3. It creates a good kind of competition. You will have more third party vendors and as a result, competitors in that space will arise. That should result in overall quality improvements. A vibrant third party program is not one way communication. If you read Computer Reseller News, you know that communication is key - from relatively small markets like REALbasic support up to big OEM type deals.
