I am not amazed perl is fast in this kind of operations: it was born to handle text; perl stays for "Practical Extractor and Report Language", so I
guess that is its bread for its teeth. :-)
Oh, I always thought it meant, "Pretty Esoteric Rubbish Lister"... :)

Apart that, its parser, and compiler is really fast, so it can be fast,
especially in regular expression pattern handling.
