I have also read with frustration the negative response to R2 so far, and have experienced a similar problem to you, it also took me minutes to see a few issues when using the IDE on XP SP2.
Everytime I run my larger projects in debug mode the IDE just disappears immediately after the creation of the debug executable. There is no crash message and I do not have any other explanation except everthing just goes away. If I have not saved the changes the changes cannot be recovered when I relaunch the IDE. The projects can be built successfully with R2 and have all be debugged and built in R1 without any problem 100´s of times without a problem. I did not have any time during this release process to do any Beta testing and am regretting this now. R2 fixes a number of important issues that I have been causing problems and I have been anxious to port my projects to the new R2. However, I now am unable to work with the debugger in this release. I use just the date control plugin from Einhugur but this has never caused problems in any of the previous releases. In every release I have been wishing for stability over anything else and I really thought with R1, RS was actually getting somewhere in dealing with stability, I have been proved completely wrong with R2 however and am back to launching a project and then crossing my fingers that it will execute.
