Helen, The only time I've experienced that issue is with a malformed GUID.
I encountered an issue a while back where the GUID in a particular page was faulty (only had 31 characters somehow) and it was throwing a page error. Have a look at the GUID for that page element - and (as silly as it may seem) count the characters in your GUID. If that's not it - keep chasing the VPN solution.
