I'm not certain about Byte, but if you write an article and it gets
accepted they'll pay you. Also, some people assign more credibility to an
article than an advertisement.

Perhaps taking the $4000 per month and use part of it to pay the salaries
and benefits of technical writer - programmer teams for Linux articles
would be a viable strategy. It sort of like tricking the press into paying
you for your advertisements.

As a spin off, it might also lead to a gradual improvement in 
documentation.
