This problem seems to have decreased markedly in recent years, as the
2940 driver gets better, and the number of weird cards decreases.  In 1996
you would be lucky if your Adaptec card worked at all, and the specs would
change every week.  In 1997 you would probably make it work, but you would
usually have to apply some kernel patch or another.  In 1998 I would say
that 85% of Adaptec cards and all the new ones will work without any
particular efforts on the end user part.  By 1999 I hope the entire
problem has gone away.

FWIW, mine work fine.
