I think the bigger question is not how many teams make the playoffs, but how many teams are playing meaningful games throughout the season.
The NFL has handled this by making the regular season record the key to placement in the playoffs. Our recent debacle against the Colts made it likely that the Pats will not be hosting the AFC championship game. There are meaningful games in the NFL all the way up until week 17.
