Middle relief is the only hole. I think Paps will bounce back. From: Steve Ouellette [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2010 08:24 AM To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: Re: From Boston.com
I don't remember a lot of caveats about there being four months to go before the season starts. I just remember a lot of "why didn't the cheap bastards just give Victor whatever he wanted?" I don't think I've changed my tune. They went and signed one premium free agent, and they made a good baseball move trading some prospects for a power hitter in his prime. They spent big dollars on two guys who are still in their 20s and likely to hold their value -- or at least a good chunk of their value -- through the end of their contracts. The payroll is still currently lower than last year's. The bullpen is a crapshoot. I'll just cross my fingers. Steve O On Thu, Dec 9, 2010 at 10:01 AM, Tom Salemi <[email protected]> wrote: Oh stop. If you don't want real-time commentary on the Sox start a Sox correspondence with John and Abigail Adams. We all issued the caveat, we'll wait until the rest of the off-season. I had no idea the Gonzalez deal would come together this quickly. And Crawford - as you noted - didn't seem like a precise fit. Although you seem to have changed your tune on that. Did you reconsider your position or just pour another scoop of Kool Aid in your morning Cheerios? :) The thing with Victor is this. The Sox didn't want him. Fine. Then why shortchange him on an offer. Just let the guy go. And what if Victor had said yes? Could the extra $12m on the payroll have torpedoed the Crawford deal? Anyway, Theo has $10m to build a bullpen. This is his achilles' heel (and not his alone.) Let's get'er done. I could see standing against the deal in principle, saying the Sox didn't need to overpay for his particular talents. But why worry about Gonzalez? Theo has that figured out already. I'd like a little more pop, but I'm a Crawford fan from way back so I cannot complain. And I'm happy the Red Sox are wearing their big boy pants. I feel like I'm getting a $50 per ticket effort. He's a terrific player and he'll certainly help them but I can't say I'm thrilled. If he gets this kind of deal, what is Gonzalez worth? Maybe that Liverpool deal is providing new streams of cash... ;P -- Matt ________________________________ From: Tom Salemi <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, December 9, 2010 12:18:44 AM Subject: From Boston.com Red Sox to sign Crawford <http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2010/12/red_sox_to_sign.html> A Major League source had told the Globe the deal is for seven years and $142 million.
