But Crawford doesn't play center. He's a left fielder whose biggest asset is
his speed, so Fenway limits his defensive value somewhat. I certainly
wouldn't turn down Crawford, but he doesn't really fit. Another lefthanded
hitter and his price is going to be ridiculous, thanks to Jayson Werth. I
don't want to give any OF an 8-year contract ...
I don't mind throwing Ryan Kalish out there in left. I think he's going to
be Trot Nixon with a little speed.

So he fits now because he only got seven years?

Saltamatek is a lot easier to take now that they have Crawford and Gonzalez.
Had they both been in place when Martinez walked you wouldn't have heard a
peep. But they weren't. Theo gambled, let a premium hitter go at a fair
market value with the hopes he could secure two better ones. Fortunately, he
did. His plan worked. But at the time there was no guarantee that it would.

But I think it's still a fair question to ask. What's more valuable,
Martinez catching @ $12m a year or Crawford, a redunancy in some people's
eyes since the Sox have some OFers, in the OF at $20+?

Bottomline, I'm happy with the team as its constituted. But there's more
than one way to build a baseball team.
