Whatever?

Oh, active closers?
I don't know anyone not on the Sox or Yankees. Except for the guy in Baltimore
who slammed obama and loves Ted Nugent. :-)

He doesn't believe that there is some inherent skill that makes
a pitcher a "closer". He feels that the great closers of the moment were
yesterday's also-rans and will be tomorrow's also-rans.

Other than Mariano Rivera I can't think of one other pitcher
that has been a premier closer for more than a few years.

So I guess he doesn't respect closers.

He doesn’t spend time on middle relief because he doesn’t
respect them or doesn’t respect the pool of applicants as they’re all guys who
couldn’t make it as starters or closers?

I really don’t understand the comment on closers?

I think the bullpen being a crapshoot has always been Theo's
opinion. He feels that closers are the flavor-of-the-month kind of guys and
can come out of nowhere for little money.

I don't think I've changed my tune. They went and signed one
premium free agent, and they made a good baseball move trading some prospects
for a power hitter in his prime. They spent big dollars on two guys who are
still in their 20s and likely to hold their value -- or at least a good chunk
of their value -- through the end of their contracts. The payroll is still
currently lower than last year's.

The bullpen is a crapshoot. I'll just cross my fingers.

Oh stop. If you don't want real-time commentary on the Sox
start a Sox correspondence with John and Abigail Adams. We all issued the
caveat, we'll wait until the rest of the off-season. I had no idea the Gonzalez
deal would come together this quickly. And Crawford - as you noted - didn't
seem like a precise fit.

Although you seem to have changed your tune on that. Did you
reconsider your position or just pour another scoop of Kool Aid in your morning
Cheerios? :)

The thing with Victor is this. The Sox didn't want him. Fine.
Then why shortchange him on an offer. Just let the guy go.

And what if Victor had said yes? Could the extra $12m on the
payroll have torpedoed the Crawford deal?

Anyway, Theo has $10m to build a bullpen. This is his achilles'
heel (and not his alone.) Let's get'er done.

already.

I'd like a little more pop, but I'm a Crawford fan from way
back so I cannot complain. And I'm happy the Red Sox are wearing their big boy
