Hi Brian,
I have tank raised Common Percs that live in a bubbletip anenome. The
anenome's be in my tank for the past 10 years and the clowns are that age as
well. Unfortunatley my dominant female died the other week of natural causes
(laying a few hundred eggs every 2 weeks for the past eight years must be
pretty knackering!!) so I left the male on his own for a week and then
bought him a new mate (very small perc).
When I released the new Perc it hid in the corner as it was only 0.75 inches
long and my 4 x 5inch tangs were trying to see him and he got a bit
spooked!! To my amazement the old male swam about 2 feet across the tank
from his anenome, greeted the new clown and then herded it back to the
anenome where its been with him ever since!!
Years ago when I first got the anenome and the clowns they wouldn't go in
it. They would swim near it and look at it as though something in their tiny
minds was telling them they should be associating with it!! It took them
about 3-4 months before I saw one of them go in it and then they never came
very far out of it again!!
Have you got a pic of your long tentacle anenome as it may just not be the
right sort?? Is it creamy white with pink/purple tips and maybe an orange
base?? If so its probably an atlantic Condylactis anenome that they won't
associate with. They also won't ever go in a carpet as they don't know what
that is either (not from their region). Clarkii clowns would probably go in
the carpet. You need to get a proper bubble tip (e.quadricolor) and make
sure when buying it that the foot is not damaged or it will be doomed.
In my personal opinion I don't think anenome's should be sold as they have a
very poor survival rate and I have read articles that have hinted that a
bubbletip that is 12-18 inches across could be 100 years old, and then its
sold and lives 3 months in a tank!!
For all of you who are having problems with anenome's, have you tried using
a polyfilter in your system as anenome's are very sensitive to dissolved
metals and a polyfilter will help a lot... just a thought.
You're probably thinking i'm a bit 2 faced saying anenomes shouldn't be sold
when I have one myself! Way back when I bought it I was a newbie to
reefkeeping and I like most people bought anything that looks nice - to
start with until you get a good book and research the inverts first! I
probably wouldn't have got it if i'd read all the article's first!!
Hope this helps
Jules
