That's correct. Silica sand IS largely inert, since glass IS basically 
silica, and if silica sand would wreak havoc to a tank's parameters, so 
would the tank itself. The bacteria and mini-critters in a silica sand bed 
couldn't care less about what the composition is, as long as its fine.
