Title: RE: Hermit crabs
Correct, a shed exoskeleton would be light & thin, not "meaty".

When I removed the crab from the tank it was fairly "meaty" to me. I would assume the a sheded exoskeleton would be thin and delicate, no ?

Are you sure there were two crabs in one shell, or was the hermit Just moulting(shedding its exoskeleton) as they do when they grow? If you caught the crab shedding, you're lucky to see it, they usually hide & shed at night. They are vulnerable to predators until their new exo. hardens.

A little update for those that are interested. Once again I'm examining the
statement that once a tank has been "coppered" no inverts can be kept in it.
I have a 120G FO (I love reefs but also butterflies and angelfish). It has
been "coppered" in the past. I introduced three hermit crabs at the
beginning of the month.

As Shane suggested I tested for copper this weekend and found that
detectiable levels of copper are present. Not good, I know. I've got some
PolyFilters coming in and will use them ASAP.

In addition, something very strange happened this weekend. Maybe someone can
explain. I was looking at one of the hermits and he seemed to be dead.
Indeed he was, BUT he was slowly being pushed out of his shell ! The amazing
thing is that ANOTHER hermit was in the shell as well. Is this possible ?
Two hermits in the same shell ? I don't know if the copper killed the first
hermit or he lost a fight for the shell for some reason. Any explanations
here for a FO guy ?

I have put other shells in the tank and one of the other hermits has already
changed his shell.

My intentions is to slowly move more towards a reef setup. Get some good
live rock, dump the wet/dry etc. What is everyone's opionon on 4x96W PC for
my 120 (48x24x24) ?

TIA
