Mike, I struggled with this problem for some time first on a 55 and then on a 100 that I moved the live rock into. I started a algal scrubber in the sump. I was just starting to get the caluerpa going when I had to take the tank down. I did however notice that in my production systems at work when we have a large amount of macroalgae's (especially the reds) the stray little balls of valonia turn white and die.
The bad news for you is that once the valonia starts it sets up a system to perpetuate itself. Suffice to say you are in a bad way and I haven't seen anything that will really control it.
