I have had bubble algae for what seems like years in my 125 gallon reef tank. At first I freaked out and tried just about everything to get rid of it. Like you said, nothing really appears to be the cure all for it. That being said, I have been able to keep it under some kind of control using various methods. I have two emerald crabs who like to eat it, and they have left everything else alone. All they like is algae. I switched to an RO/DI water source. I also have caulerpa in my main tank which helps to compete with the bubble algae for nutrients. I still have bubble algae, but it's not taking over my tank, so I'm OK with it. FWIW

Mike,
I struggled with this problem for some time first on a 55 and then on a 100
that I moved the live rock into. I started a algal scrubber in the sump. I
was just starting to get the caluerpa going when I had to take the tank
down. I did however notice that in my production systems at work when we
have a large amount of macroalgae's (especially the reds) the stray little
balls of valonia turn white and die.
The bad news for you is that once the valonia starts it sets up a system to
perpetuate itself. Suffice to say you are in a bad way and I haven't seen
anything that will really control it.
