Had the same problem 2 years ago,in 99, got some live rock from a friend,it
looked great with lots of life and those beautiful anemones, well after
introducing them to my established tank, june 2000 the tank was over-run by
the once beautiful aiptasia.Got 3 pepermints, they ate only small
aiptasia,tried that for another 6 months,still aiptasia.
Then I got fed up and bought a copperband. In about 2 weeks the tank was
clean once again of aiptasia. But from day 1 after introducing my copperband
I fed it small Brine shrimp.
If you do decide to add one get it used to some sort of food besides
aiptasia.
My copperband never touched my coral,he did however feed on my feather
duster.A small sacrifice if you ask me.
aiptasia after spawning will end up in the smallest and hardest to reach of
places.Including in you sump or filters. They are the devil in person.
My copperband was fat and healthy after ridding my tank of probably hundreds
of aiptasia.
They will over-run the tank and establish themselves besides coral, they will
then compete for food and they will overgrow the coral and its tentacles
will burn your LPS or SPS.
You must act fast and act now.Especially if you have SPS.The small polyps
will become irritated and retreat, therefore stop feeding and will be
stressed,resulting in Death.
The copperband was only 40$ compared to 15$ shrimps, compared to 1000$ in
corals,the solution was simple.
It was a worthwhile investment.
By the way my copperband was stung and engulfed by my huge purple tipped
anemone,it ate him alive.IRONIC isn't it?
While hunting for small anemones it was killed by an anemone.
Good luck.
Dan

p.s. The copperband is gone but also is all the aiptasia, whatever grows
back is very small and is soon eaten up by my peppermints.
Today in 2001 my tank is aiptasia free. The problem lasted for 2
years it is not worth the aggrevation.
