You know, it could be anything.  I charge a monthly rate just to keep
the site online, which is really a time-saver for them in the long
run.  Really, it helps if the client was burned bad trying to host it
themselves, which is typical, so many things can go horribly wrong--
then it makes more sense for them to pay me every month, instead of a
faceless, uncaring hosting company.

And why would I bother with a one-shot "design" sale, with no
recurring income?  That's charity work.  Slaving away for the rest of
my life building websites, that's too much like a "real" job.  If
there's no recurring income, you're probably wasting your time.  The
best strategy is to hook 'em with a nice, inexpensive design--you make
it back over the next 10+ years on the monthly rate, as long as you
keep their site up, keep their email boxes running, keep SEO up to
date, etc.

I designed a website for a psychologist and she rarely needs updates
now that she has enough repeat business.  (Although, I recently gave
her a free jQuery redesign, to save me the trouble of exporting MySQL
settings from a dud host.)  When I changed hosts, we had to change
Outlook email settings for her entire office because the new email
server was more up-to-date, then it came to light her office had some
Outlook calendar synronization issues that needed adjustment.  Things
you would never expect, but absolutely necessary!
