When you say 'webmaster' it makes me think of SysAdmin stuff. I would be really clear from the start what type of support and maintenance is included with your work as this could get sticky later.
Some of the tasks that goes into hosting a web app (but is usually not in the domain of web developers) can include: - Scaling web, application, db and host servers to handle load (linux, apache, mongrel, mysql, thin, rails, java, etc). - Rotating and monitoring log files for errors and security issues - Keeping up to date on OS patches (e.g., linux package updates like apt-get, yum, etc). - Maintaining the database layer (mysql, postgres, indexes, vacuming, log shipping) - Keeping SSL certificates up to date - Possibly managing DNS, firewall rules, domain registrations - Possibly dealing with email issues For example, if you write a rails app and have detailed logging and lots of bugs, and the log files fill the hard drives and crash the server VS the webmaster did not configure log rotate and apache's log files fill the hard drives and crash the server... who is responsible? Client does some OS updates and breaks your app server... you could spend a lot of time working on what you may think is your problem, but in fact never was. Do you bill? Just some things to think about. I advise being clear (on paper) what type of support you offer and have a few trusted admins that you can refer them to if they ask for system maintenance. If it is anything more than a simple home page, or revenue is tied to their site at all, I would keep as much distance as possible and refer.
