While it's probably off topic for this group I have to agree with Nate, Jim seems to have an unrealistic perception of what repeaters are about. No where in the rules does it say ham frequencies are to be used only for emergencies. What it does say is that we are a "service" with several fundamental purposes, one of them being "to provide a voluntary noncommercial communications service to the public, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications." There are 4 other paragraphs describing the purpose and basis of the Amateur Radio SERVICE.
I do have to agree with Jim in that there are far to many conversations held on repeaters that could be held on simplex frequencies. While repeaters are a gathering point in the radio spectrum by way of the way they operate, I think a lot of us would monitor the repeaters more if there weren't so many "babblers" on these channels. Who wants to hear "Now I passing the Wall Mart, Now I'm passing the Burger King, Now I'm passing........" on and on ad nausium. I would like to see more repeaters pass multiple PL codes or use the touch tone call paging available in many radios so that those of us wanting to use the repeater frequency as a central gathering point could be called without having to listen to all the extraneous "garbage".
