Why are you guys still using PL259 connectors on any thing but HF?

Because manufacturers like GE and Motorola use(d) them for everything including 800 megs.  While BNC and N connectors offer a constant impedance type connection, there isn't anything inherently wrong with a PL or SO connector.  There are literally thousands of repeaters working with PL connectors.

If you must use PL259 connectors, at least use a quality crimp-on instead of cobbling together the former.

Well, we were talking about 1/4 inch Andrew superflex as interconnecting cabling and they don't make a crimp on PL connector for that.

BTW. The only flavor of RG-214 I have ever seen is silver plate over copper braid, 98% braid on the first shield and 97 or 98% braid on the second shield.

Then you haven't seen the stuff made several years ago for the Satellite Industry that was passed off as RG-214.  Many times that stuff was cheap RG-8 labeled as RG-214/U.  Some didn't even have two shields, let alone silver plating.  As others have mentioned, there were many flavours of RG-214 produced, but the only kind that should be used in duplex is the one with two silver plated shields.
