YES! Car batteries are designed to be rugged, insensitive to temperature, and to provide one huge surge of power. The compromises made to make them perform well in cars, make them lousy backup batteries. Less capacity per unit volume, and little tolerance to deep discharge. Trolling batteries are a much better choice. Still designed for ruggedness, but less compromise for temperature, and designed to output a moderate current for hours. Power Sonic and others do make LA and LC cells designed for actual backup power use. They just aren't as readily available. For each type of battery, check carefully the charge requirements and voltage. A charger designed for one type will kill one type, and undercharge other types. Yahoo!
