Tom,

The Icom H-16 radio cannot process digital coded squelch; it is capable only
of tone coded squelch.

I have to wonder why a Ham repeater would convert the access to CDCSS
(Continuous Digital Coded Squelch System) unless the intent was to create a
defacto "closed repeater" which could be accessed only by persons with
commercial-grade or high-end and recent Amateur-grade radios. Other than
keeping out the riff-raff, one advantage of DCS is that there is only one
approved format, and that means that radios of any brand can mute silently
with any other brand.

Yes, there are aftermarket CDCSS encoders and decoders that you can purchase
to install in your H-16, but it may be less hassle to simply purchase a new
and better radio that includes both CDCSS and CTCSS as standard.

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] tone encoder/decoder board

I have an ICOM H-16, VHF HANDHELD. Our system has changed to
apparently a DCS tone of 306 and the tones on the H-16 only go to 254.
My question is, is there any way, add-on or mod, to get this tone for
encoding and decoding?

Thanks,
Tom
