Sorry, I'm out for the weekend, not able to respond to the comments on this
PR as promptly as I'd like to. I can make the changes and update the PR on
Monday (hopefully) after some testing. If at that point we feel that the PR is
not helping, we can certainly choose to not commit it. I think that the changes
are small and in the right direction.
