   ### What changes were proposed in this pull request?
   Previously, when passing wrong argument types to the DataFrame methods it 
would silently try to call methods on the argument types expecting valid input 
types. This would then fail with illegible stack traces that don't help the 
user. This patch adds better type assertions and error messages for cases where 
lists of Columns etc are expected.
