The old `BlockStoreShuffleFetcher.fetch(...)` returned `Iterator[Nothing]`
which is why that current casting is necessary -- but it's ugly.
I like your idea of casting in the branches to help make the types more
explicit. I'll make the change now unless you'd like more time to think about
it.
