    yes, I completely realize that this is not a new problem you are 
introducing.  I think I've been confused by the types in the old code a couple 
of times in the past.  I was just thinking, as long as you are touching this, 
rather than making the bad code slightly worse, maybe we can make it slightly 
better :P
