   > As you acknowledged, the rationale for "Assisted-by" may look outdated in
a few years, whereas the current "Generated-by" is more general and
future-proof.

I agree that "Assisted-by" may become outdated as our relationship with AI
evolves, but my position on "Generated-by" is that it is inaccurate _today_.

When I author a patch but use AI to check for mistakes, refactor some parts,
or even generate some unit tests for code that I wrote, it would be an
overstatement to say that AI "generated" the patch. It definitely _assisted_,
maybe _co-authored_, but not more than that. Attributing authorship to a bot
also has problems.

   > The proposed change, by contrast, comes down to personal preference.

"Assisted-by" had broad support on the `legal-discuss` thread linked to from
the PR description. It is also the convention in several major projects:
   - [Linux
kernel](https://cdn.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/process/coding-assistants.html#:~:text=the%20following%20format:-,Assisted%2Dby,-:%20LLM%20[TOOL1]%20[TOOL2)
   -
[LLVM](https://llvm.org/docs/AIToolPolicy.html#:~:text=message%20trailer%20like-,Assisted%2Dby,-:%20.%20This%20transparency%20helps)
   -
[OpenSSL](https://github.com/openssl/openssl/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#:~:text=of%20it.%20The-,Assisted%2Dby,-:%20trailer%20)
   -
[Wireshark](https://github.com/wireshark/wireshark/blob/5a9be0fcb761c052621ce179f41881a188d2c6b7/.gitmessage#L11)
   -
[containerd](https://github.com/containerd/.project/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#:~:text=consider%20adding%20an-,Assisted%2Dby,-trailer%20to%20the)

I think the case for "Assisted-by" is stronger than just my personal
preference.

I should have included this research on prior art in the PR description. I
will update it accordingly.
