My 2 cents about this PR: is it possible to create a new `WriteAheadLog`
(such as, BatchWriteAheadLog) that wraps the existing `WriteAheadLog` and
implement the new logic in `BatchWriteAheadLog`? Then you don't need to add so
many pairs of `XXX` and `XXXAsync`.
