I agree with Reynold; mutability seems like it would add a lot of potential
for confusion in exchange for not much benefit. Even if we did decide that
mutability was a good idea, I think we would need design docs to very precisely
specify the expected behavior and communicate our guarantees / semantics to
end-users.
