I would suspect a memory hole.  I'm not saying it's correct to not
recognize the rest of the RAM (up to 4G) but I suspect there's a hole
getting in the way.

What happens if you manually crash the machine using the
<ctrl><alt><sysrq>c finger-bender?  Do you see the kdump kernel
immediately exec?
