I realized about 30 seconds after sending this message that the very
machine I sent it from has VMware running on the Xen kernel.

I'm pretty sure there was an issue somewhere in the past (perhaps with
earlier Fedora versions or early beta's of RHEL5) but obviously the
statement that it might not work is incorrect at this point.
