        thanks, but that has nothing to do  (that I am aware of) with
building or installing the RPMs, which is my problem. 

Also, FYI, rather than editing the /etc/init.d/httpd script, it would be
much wiser to add those settings to the /etc/sysconfig/httpd file that
is designed for that purpose (which I have already done).

You need to setup your LD_LIBRARY_PATH for the apache process so put

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/oracle/10.2.0.1/client/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

in /etc/init.d/httpd
