EL5 now includes a driver "radeon_tp" which is a "technology preview". I

Thanks to everyone for the tips. It was a ID10T error on my part. I had
the monitor plugged into the wrong port. The card was recognized and
configured correctly, and everything worked once I plugged it into the
right port. It works fine with stock RHEL5.2 x86_64. What fooled me was
that the text output would appear on both ports, but only one port would
show graphics once X started, and the text mode would not come back on
the second port after X quit.
