Would UnionFS work here? I've read in the man page for mount that you
can have a filesystem appear at multiple mount points, though I've never
tried it.
So, you might be able to overlay some slow storage on top of some fast
storage's mount, and then rsync the unchanged files to a second mount
point with a cron job based on mtime and --delete.
You'd have to work out the write semantics with unionfs, so that your
new writes go to your fast storage. This looks like it might be a
