This is a general question which may well be offtopic so apologies if it is
the wrong place to post.
My scenario is this: -
I have various multicore servers at my disposal - between 4 and 8 cores each.
Most of the software that's run on them is for statistical genetics and it
comes as is without source code. I've noticed that they only make spectacular
use out of just the one core - top says 98 - 100% which is a total waste of
the other three to seven cores that are available per machine. So common
sense say's to run the processes in virtual machines to make more use of the
machines as they stand. I'm familiar with vmware server 1, but noticed that
vmware server 2 allows you to nominate cpu's for virtual machines which looks
pretty good.
My question is has anyone else done this successfully and can this be done
with other vm's like Xen for instance. I'm just about to go off and do some
research for myself but would be interested to hear about anyone elses
experiences if they've done this already.
How about running more than one instance of the software?
Virtualizing always adds a layer of complexity.
