Subject: Re: [rhelv5-list] absolute minimum package list (was RHEL 5.5 and
creeping dependencies)

This thread leads me to ask, is there any guidance by RedHat or others
on what the absolute minimum package set is for a RHEL 5.4 server. It
seems as if the @base group includes lots of extras that may be
necessary in some instances but not in most (like redhat-lsb). How do
you determine what packages go onto your servers and which ones are
"safe" to not install even though they may be in base? Research? Trial
and Error? Asking this list like Chris did? :-)

For the most part, my organization ended up with our default package set by a
decent amount of trial and error. Though using the "--nobase" switch in our
kickstarts trimmed our package count significantly. From there we explicitly
added the packages we needed, and came out with a number ~214 RPMs. For us
adding the --nobase switch was key to getting our builds the way we liked them.
