I've been thinking about this issue for a while now. Personally, I don't like numbering schemes as a solution to a problem because I find them fragile and an indication that something else could be done to solve the problem. However, in this case, I can't think of another way. The unpredictability of the order of methods, and the importance of this order, is the wall I keep hitting. So, yes, that could be a good solution, it's simple and should make it possible to work things out.
