I believe /c suggests a gain to 89 dB whether this will result in clipping or not. /k suggests a gain to 89 dB except if this will result in clipping, in which case it suggests the maximum gain before the onset of clipping. Clipping in MP3s sounds like any other sort of clipping, distorted and overblown. However modern CDs are mastered so high that most of your gains will be in the negative range, sometimes as high as -10 or -12 dB. It seems that most of the MP3Gain documentation covers positive gains, so I'm not sure if it reduces volume further if it still clips at 89 dB with the /k option.
