Pat Farrell says that all lossless formats are much the same.
Tommypeters suggests using xACT for ripping. joncourage suggests EAC
and mauidj seems to be in the same situation as me, being an Apple
guy.

Why do you think it is not lossless?
The point of compression is to make a file smaller by removing redundancy. Everyone accepts that Stuffit and PKZip are lossless, you compress files and then can restore them to the exact bit prefect data. That is what lossless audio techniques do.

They do it a little differently, as using Stuffit or PKzip on a PCM (wav) file generally doesn't make it any smaller.

Lossless audio compressions don't get the 10-to-1 compression that Stuffit or PKzip got for Word documents, or that MP3 does for music. They typically get 2-to-1, which is right in line with the 60% that you are reporting. Something between 40% and 60% is normal, depending on the music files' actual data.

Can anyone finally clarify what the best solution for optimum audio
quality is?

Lossless restores all of the bits in the PCM file. In theory, they are all identical. Except that some formats are not transmitted to your SqueezeBox/Transporter compressed, which requires more SlimServer computer work, takes up additional network bandwidth, allows more potential for network interference to impact the data stream, etc.
