I've been using the command line version of mp3gain to normalize the volume of mp3 files. After doing some research about how it works, I'm afraid I might be slowly destroying my mp3 files (since I've run it over .mp3s multiple times without undoing what was there).
As I understand it, mp3gain will change the frame headers on mp3 files and adjust the gain level on each header then write APE tags to the file with undo information. Is there an alternative to mp3gain which will only write tags rather than modify the frames that works with slim server and squeezebox 3? I'd like to move away from mp3gain since it seems to be poorly documented.
