Ok, I'm sufficiently confused now. This page (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AutomaticVolumeAdjustment) is out of sync with the supported tags page and seems to indicate that slimserver does recognize APE tags that mp3gain produces. It further seems to indicate you can apply them through mp3gain.exe analysis which doesn't whack the frames but applies the APE tags
