I may have found the answer to my question. It does not appear that slim server supports any kind of replay gain tags other than those found in FLAC/Vorbis (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerSupportedTags).
Can someone confirm the only way to add gain information to .mp3 files is to whack the frames with mp3gain?
