I'm beginning to think you're correct. I've done some experimentation
and it seems that the "track analysis" button writes the tags.

Doi what does it mean that the "Gain" buttons alters the audio of the
file?

Also, can anyone explain this weirdness?

1. Import a CD with iTunes to an MP3. Do NOT turn on "sound check."
2. MP3Tag shows there is an iTunNorm tag, and lots of other tag values
(No ReplayGain values). Clearly, iTunes writes these tags EVEN IF
Soundcheck is turned off.
3. Run MP3Gain Track Aanlysis to generate ReplayGain values.
4. Now MP3Tag will show no tag values except the ReplayGain values
generated by MP3Gain!
5. go back to MP3Gain and undo the changes and "remove tags"
6. MP3Tag will now show all the original tags and their values
(including the iTunNorm tag)

However, if you do an extra step things you get a different result:

1. Import a CD with iTunes to an MP3. Do NOT turn on "sound check."
2. MP3Tag shows there is an iTunNorm tag, and lots of other tag values
(No ReplayGain values).
2.5 Delete the iTunNorm tag using MP3Tag.
3. Run MP3Gain Track Aanlysis to generate ReplayGain values.
4. Now MP3Tag will show ALL the tag values, including the ReplayGain
values generated by MP3Gain. There will be no iTunNorm tag.
5. go back to MP3Gain and undo the changes and "remove tags"
6. MP3Tag will now show all the original tags and their values (there
will be no iTunNorm tag)

Something weird happens with MP3Gain when there's an iTunNorm tag in
the file.

My suspicion is that the iTunNorm tag is still in the file in the first
scenario, and i'll bet SS is using it instead of the ReplayGain tag
(which is NOT what i want to happen).

anybody have an idea as to what's going on?
