The page you are quoting is from the wiki, (i.e. user generated) so not
a "Slim Devices" statement. More to the point, this is the page that
talks about tools to use for ripping, it says nothng about how SS plays
music...

SS will handle Apple Lossless fine - it understands the files and knows
exactly what to do with them. However the SQUEEZEBOX can't play these
files natively, so SS has to transcode them to FLAC or WAV before they
get sent down the wire. This is pretty much a transparent process.

You should be aware that the assertion that one lossless format sounds
different to another one (WAV, FLAC, ALAC) is to say the least
controversial. Several people have reported hearing a difference,
no-one AFAIK has come up with anything resembling an explanation of how
this might be possible. It is easy to demonstrate the bit-equivalence
of the various formats.

As for itunes - if you are committed to using it, or really like using
it for some reason, then persist with the itunes integration. But if as
far as you are concerned its just another ripper then IMHO you should
avoid it like the plague, its just a source of frustration. Figure
out how to get FLAC rips, its well worth it. There are plenty of
options and people here who will help you with any snags...
