That must be a late in the run one, I think I started looking at SliMP3 in 2001 or so, didn't buy until the SqueezeBox came out. Even if the 2003 date is correct, that is four years, two iterations of Moore's law. Its really, really old. Wired should be fast enough for anything. A Slimp3 can't do them, so your Mac is converting on the fly. You might want to try an album or two ripping it direct to high quality MP3 and see if that works better.
