I seem to recall when I was in the market for a DVD burner that some
drives handle copy protection better than others, both playback and
ripping.

>From Googling, I found that the NEC 5040a (I think, I'm at work at the
mo') which I bought is a good one for ripping whilst ignoring copy
protection. http://www.cdfreaks.com/devices/ is a good resource.

What worked for me (Win XP SP 2)...
Install drive
Turn off all auto-run in the registry (plenty of info if you search the
web)
Install cd-ex http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
In cd-ex drive options, set ripping method to "Paranoia, Full"
Insert disc, rip everything apart from the data track

I've never used it, but I **think** cd-ex can do flac. The bulk of my
stuff is 320kbps CBR mp3, which it does superbly once you've told it
where your lame.dll is located. I don't think there's the error
checking that you get with EAC though, but the above ripping method's
never failed with a copy protected disc yet!
