Well I would file them all under "Pop", with a couple under
"Pop;Ambient", using multiple genres.  Multiple genres are really
useful - you decide how you browse.  Me, I use them very extensively on
Classical music, and don't really care about pop :)

Anyway, you could also consider the Custom Browse and Custom Scan
add-ins.  You could create a new tag called "Mood", and browse using
it, plus out of the box it allows you to browse decades within any
genre, which will help you with one of your specific queries.

The key advantage of multiple genres is that you can browse your
library in many different ways, which allows you to stumble across cool
stuff easier.  I'm always forgetting what I've got, so it's handy for
me.
